Summary
A George III pier-glass from a design by Robert Adam, the central rectangular plate flanked by wide mirrored borders below a demi-circular mirror-bordered plate, the giltwood frame carved with overlapping money-pattern, chanelling, egg-and-tongue, pendant harebells and rosettes, the demi-lune upper section filled with radiating husks alternating with shells and scrolling foliage, supported by four caryatids holding wheatear garlands centred by twin rams heads.
Provenance
One of a pair bought by Ralph Dutton from Christie's, London, March 1956, for £46 including repair. One sold possibly now at Basildon Park. Said to have been originally designed by Robert Adam for Derby House, Grosvenor Square, London, about 1773-4.
