Summary
An ambrotype one-sixth-plate image depicting a three-quarter-length studio portrait of a young Victorian woman seated, resting her right elbow on a small table. The image has been retouched with gold highlights on the woman's earrings and ring on her left hand. She is wearing a dark dress with full sleeves. The image is set in a lidded wooden case covered in maroon leather/leatherette and lined with maroon velvet. The case hinges with leather and has a brass clasp. The back and front covers have a simple embossed pair of parallel lines within the leather and next to each is a fine gold line. The interior edges of the case where the leather/leatherette wraps round each side has a simple painted gold line. It is set under glass, beneath which is an oval plain brass mat with fine embossed border. There is an ornate brass preserver. Condition/deterioration: There is only a small amount of damage to the interior of the case in the centre where some of the leatherette covering has torn and the wood beneath is visible.
Provenance
