Summary
Details of the bell above the clock are as follows: Inscription: J : TAYLOR & CO.. FOUNDERS LOUGHBOROUGH. [no date] Founder and date: John Taylor & Co of Loughborough, Leicestershire – cast c.1860. The firm became John Taylor & Co (previously John Taylor & Son) in 1858. Mouldings: 2:2-1-1:3:2 Canons and argent: Six angular canons and low argent (all intact) Frequency / note: Nominal 3494Hz (A minus 12 cents) Provenance: Not known (although if it had been dated it might well have been possible to trace it from the Loughborough bellfoundry archives) Fittings: The bell is suspended between two parallel timbers fixed across the roof purlins over the clock. It is fitted with a long wrought iron bar stock, the ends of which were turned to form gudgeons. An iron chiming lever is fitted to the stock but this just sits on top of the supporting timbers. There are no bearings and the bell cannot be swung. The clapper is suspended from an independent crown staple. There are light packing pieces between the bell and stock, and the supporting ironwork consists of two sets of straps through the double canons. A string tied to the clapper allows the bell to be rung – with its companion – by “clocking”.
