Summary

Piece of Gibeon Meteorite from Windhoek Namibia. Collected by Maurice 4th Lord Egerton in September 1935. The original meteor body thought to be 4 billion years old and to have been 4m square, fragmented on entry to earths atmposhere and pieces have been found over a wide area of central Namibia. There are over 120 recorded samples. Thought to have come from an exploding super nova. Iron alloy or Octahedrite meteor. Landed about 200-220 million years ago. Part of Lord Egerton's ethnographic collection once displayed in the Tenants' Hall

Provenance

Collected by Maurice 4th Lord Egerton in September 1935. Detailed in his 1935 diary entries. Previously miss catalogued on CMS and Tatton inventory as part of Hoba meterorite
