Caption
Albert Delaval was the son of George, 20th Baron Hastings (1857 – 1904) and the Hon. Elizabeth Harbord. He served in the 7th Hussars in World War I, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He married, in 1907, Lady Marguerite Nevill, daughter of Sir William Nevill, 1st Marquess of Abergavenny (1826-1915). The artist added ‘St Helier’ to his name to acknowledge his place of birth. During World War I, he painted many wartime portraits, having been introduced to leading British Generals by the Lieutenant Governor of Jersey, General Henry Abadie.

Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Albert Edward Delavel Astley, 21st Lord Hastings was born on 24 November 1882. He was the son of Sir George Manners Astley, 20th Lord Hastings (1857-1904) and the Hon. Elizabeth Evelyn Harbord. He served in the 7th Hussars in World War I and was twice mentioned in despatches, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He married Lady Marguerite Helen Nevill, daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Gilbert Ralph Nevill, 3rd Marquess of Abergavenny and Maud Augusta Beckett-Denison, on 11 February 1907. Inherited Seaton Delaval from his father in 1904 .He died on 18 January 1956 at age 73
Provenance
accepted in lieu of tax by H.M. Treasury and transferred to the National Trust in 2009.

Signed bottom right: J. St. Helier Lander / 1917 Reverse of painting: Son Edwin Chapman. One small label relating again to Chapman Bro's framing company found between two supporting members on the frames reverse. One other label/sticker is located on the cross bar of the stretcher that reads 'Sir Delaval Astley ?, 21st Lord Hastings Lt Col Norfolk ? By St Helier Lander' (however, previous details of the painting have documented the subject by a different name) Also a stamp CANVAS C in black ink.
