Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, Tsar Alexander I, Tsar of Russia and King of Poland (1777-1825), after Domenico Bossi (Trieste 1767 – Munich 1853). c.1808-1810. Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a man turned to left almost left profile in black uniform with high red collar and gold epaulettes, cross of St.George (Russia), blue ribboned and Star of The Order of St.Andrew. Blue eyes, short fair hair and whiskers. Plain grey background. A framed set of nine miniatures of plenipotentiaries present at the Congress of Vienna. Each in individual pierced and engraved gilt metal frame and displayed on a shaped cushion covered in wine coloured velvet. An engraved silver gilt plate indicates their previous descent.
Provenance
These nine miniatures were presented to Count Fersen, Swedish Minister at the Court of Louis 18, and were purchased at a sale in Stockholm by Sir Audley Gosling and given to Lady Edwards of Plas Machynleth. Lady Edwards was the mother-in-law of the Fifth Marquess of Londonderry (biography) and thence by descent until gifted to the National Trust from Lady Mairi Bury (1921-2009) 1976
