Summary
Oil painting on canvas, King George II (1683–1760), as Prince of Wales, after Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646/9 - London 1723). Full-length portrait, turned slightly to the right, head turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, his left leg forward, his right hand on his hip and his left hand on his sword hilt. He is wearing a full-bottom powdered wig and Garter robes consisting of a long, buttoned vest and a knee-length, belted coat of gold trimmed with ermine. The sleeves are false and hang long and loose. He wears breeches, white roll-ups and scarlet-heeled shoes. His cloak is scarlet and ermine-lined, with a train draped to his right. A single-arched crown of Prince of Wales rests on a console at the right.
Provenance
Part of the Bedingfeld Collection. Loaned to the National Trust by Mrs Greathead, and later by her daughter Mariella Norman, grand-daughter of Lady Sybil Bedingfeld.
