Summary
Reversible chess/backgammon board a wooden carcass with ivory, sandalwood and blackwood veneers, the ivory decorated with neo-classical garlands filled with black lacquer. The backgammon board with the monogram 'E.C.' in a central medallion on the centre of each half. Ensuite are: 3 matching ivory-veneered, sandalwood lined boxes, containing a set of conventional European chessman, the black pieces of horn, and the white pieces of ivory; a pair of turned sandalwood dice cups with ivory trim; and backgammon counters of turned ivory and sandalwood. The chesspieces displayed on another board, the dice cups and backgammon pieces inside one of the smaller internal boxes. E.India (Vizagapatam), circa 1800. Intialled E.C. for Edward Clive. Either for Edward Clive, 1st Earl of Powis (III) (1754-1839) or his son Edward Clive, 2nd Earl of Powis (III) (1785-1848). Recorded in 1944 Inventory as ‘An 18in inlaid ivory and sandalwood backgammon board containing 2 ivory and sandalwood boxes chess and draughtsmen and 2 ivory and sandalwood dice throwers' in Tapestry Drawing Room (Blue Drawing Room). Purchased by the National Trust from John George Herbert, 8th Earl of Powis and the Powis Estate Trustees in June 2010.
