Summary
A polychrome Chinese decorated lacquer six panel screen, Chinese Export, second half of the 17th century. The subject of the screen is the birthday party of the Tang General Guo Ziyi (697-781). He is shown celebrating his 80th birthday, he himself a symbol of longevity. Guo Ziyi had many loyal supporters and was popular during the Ming and Qing Dynasties as he also symbolised luck, wealth and fame. The scene depicted between borders and with further panels below. The reverse decorated with flowers and birds.
Provenance
Recorded in 1944 Inventory as ‘A 7ft 6in Japanese lac 6-fold screen chased gilt brass hinged decorated figures trees etc' in Tapestry Drawing Room (Blue Drawing Room). Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
