Summary
A Sinhalese dagger with steel blade and with ferrule and scrolled bolster of silver, the hilt of rock crystal, fluted and carved with a flowerhead at the pommel. (The hilt is a replacement, the dagger would have originally have had a hilt similar to 1180577. Sri-Lanka, 18th century. See 'Treasures from India' catalogue pg.45 / no.26.
Provenance
Collected by Robert Clive. Listed in 1774 inventory as 'a curious Knife w-h Chrystal handle and Silver mounted D-o Sheath'. Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
