Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Young Nobleman, said to be Sir William Paget, 5th Baron Paget of Beaudesert (1609-1678), attributed to Leandro Bassano (Bassano del Grappa 1557 – Venice 1622), signed mid-right in black: LEANDER A PONTE BASSs / EQUE F. labelled (20th century brass label): SAID TO BE A LORD PAGET / LEANDRO DA PONTE BASSANO 1558-1623. A full-length portrait, wearing a grey doublet trimmed with gold brocade and with lace cuffs and ruff, his shoes with gold trim and a silk scarf tied above his left knee. His right hand resting on a covered table next to his hat. In the disatnce beyond the room, through a window is a view of Venice behind.
Provenance
Bought in London by Charles, 6th Marquess of Anglesey (1885 – 1947). Previously on loan to the National Trust from the Paget family from 1982 until 2019. Accepted in lieu of Inheritance Tax by H M Government and allocated to the National Trust for Plas Newydd, 2019.
