Caption
This copy after a copy was painted by the niece of Elizabeth Cust, the wife of Philip I Yorke (1843-1804) of Erdigg. The Hon. Elizabeth Cust was an artist and copyist and catalogued the paintings at Belton House, the Cust family home, around 1805-6. Her inspiration was a work no longer in the collection at Belton on the subject of Salome with the Head of St John the Baptist that was derived from Gudio Reni. Cust softened the macabre subject by replacing the severed head with a basket of doves.
