Caption
William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire, was the son of William Cavendish, 3rd Duke of Devonshire (1698-1755) and Catherine Hoskins (d.1777). In 1748 he married Charlotte Elizabeth Boyle, Baroness Clifford (1731-1754), daughter of Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington (1695-1753), bringing the barony of Clifford into the Cavendish family. They had four children. He held various and elevated official posts, including Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (1755-56), and Lord Chamberlain (1757-62), and was also Prime Minister (1756-57)

Oil painting on canvas, William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire KG (1720-1764), after Thomas Hudson (Devonshire 1701 – Twickenham 1779). A half-length portrait, of a man, turned to the right, gazing at spectator, wearing an olive green velvet coat and a white cravat, powdered wig.
