Summary
A bidet, one of a set of three mahogany bidets, English, circa 1770, shaped as a waisted oval and fitted with a tin or sheet metal lining basin, raised on four moulded square-section supports topped by 'C'-scroll spandrels and terminating in laminated leather and brass castors.
Provenance
By descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959.
