Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Holy Family, after Carlo Maratta (Camerano 1625 – Rome 1713), previously attributed to Niccolò Berrettoni (Pasalo 1637 – Rome 1682), 18th century. The Virgin, seated, on the left, head inclined slightly to the left, facing spectator, holding up in her arms a naked Christ Child, facing spectator, curly hair, his right leg raised, his left hand holding up a piece of cloth which also winds around his body, landscape setting. Once believed to be by Niccolò Berrettoni. Berrettoni was the most faithful pupil of Pietro da Cortona before his premature death. Purchased in Italy for Sir Nathaniel Curzon by William Kent, and recorded in the Drawing Room by 1769. In a fine French Régence frame.

Purchased in Italy for Sir Nathaniel Curzon by the picture dealer William Kent (fl. 1742-1761) , 1758; recorded in Kedleston by 1766; in Withdrawing Room in 1769; bought with part of the contents of Kedleston with the aid of the National Heritage Memorial Fund in 1987 when the house and park were given to the National Trust by Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000)
