Summary
A hexagonal sun-dried prayer tablet from Iraq. In the centre, there are three large stamped circles with three smaller stamps with inscriptions; this is bordered with more inscriptions and geometric patterns. 'Four tablets of compressed sun-dried earth used in prayer at the Great Mosque, Kerbela, near Baghdad - Turkish-Arabian' (Christie's entry).
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
