English School, 19th Century. Portrait of Caroline, Duchess of Montrose seated, half-length, in a white dress with a blue ribbon and sash extensively inscribed on a lable on the reverse. Watercolour in a gold painted wood frame surmounted by a coronet with the initials 'CMM'. The inscription in two notes on the reverse reads 'Copy in Water colour 1860? / by Miss ??brock of a / Portrait of Caroline Maria / Duchess of Montrose / eldest daughter of George / 4th Duke of Manchester / married July 24, 1790 / James 3rd Duke of Montrose K. G., and / died March 24th, 1847 / The original of this / picture is in the / possession of Sir / Henry William Dashwood / Bart. of Hartington / Park oxon.' The second note, in a different hand, reads 'Given to me by Paul Foley / Xmas 1900 / Mary Hussey'.
