Worksop has been home to a number of industries such as mining, malting and timber. In 1777 the Chesterfield canal providing a vital trade route for the town by 1849 the railways had come to Worksop further expanding its industrial connections. Mining boomed in the town with the first Shireoaks Colliery shaft dropped in 1854 followed in 1898 by the Manton Colliery, by 1900 50% of the town worked in the mining industry. The Straw's shop opened in 1886 benefited from the wealth and prosperity of the town.
