Summary description
Oil painting on canvas laid down on panel, Trompe l'oeil (Drummer Boy) by Martin Battersby (1914 - Lewes 1982), 1950-60. A painting on the theme of the Mompesson Drummer Boy, a ghost. Depicted are a classical medallion, printed notice, military drum and drumsticks, a shoe (?) and three hand-written notes. He was the Luggershall drummer. Plaque at top containing face. Below the plaque is a nail from which is suspended a drum with buckled strap and drumsticks suspended as if playing. Behind the drum strap is a notice featuring the words 'Or a full and Pia...ce / EVIDENCE WITCH..S AND APPAR...NS / The Second Part. / The ENL...GED NARRATIVE OF .... / M. MOMPESSO.. / ... CAUSED BY THE VILLAN... DRUMMER / L...ON ..... MDCC..'. Below the drum, as if falling to the ground, are three pages of writing. Framed and glazed.
