A clay male ‘Provencal Santon Gardener’ doll. He is un-jointed and mounted onto a circular base. The doll has painted and moulded facial features with brown-grey painted and moulded hair with bushy sideburns and a grey painted moustache. On his head he wears a black felt hat with a large floppy brim. He has a black felt waistcoat, a brightly coloured cotton shirt with a printed decoration of large red and yellow flowers on a blue background. He has a stiff white cotton collar and cuffs with a black 'bootlace' bowtie around his neck. Around his waist is a red ribbon belt and his trousers are red flannel corduroy. His feet are black painted clay shoes mounted onto the aforementioned base. His right arm is raised and carries a wicker basket containing a painted clay lettuce and two peppers. The peppers have green plastic leaves. Under his left arm is carried a clay lantern. This has possibly become detached from a metal looped hook which is in his left hand.
