The Cawley family experienced great personal loss during both World Wars. The three sons of the 1st Lord Cawley were all killed in action during the First World War while Captain John Cawley, youngest son of the 2nd Lord Cawley, shown in this posthumous portrait by Godfrey Hayman was killed in action near Tunis in 1943. A year later, his elder brother Fredrick Cawley was wounded in action at Normandy.
