Summary description

Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Young Woman, manner of Sir Anthony Van Dyck (Antwerp 1599 - Blackfriars 1641). Portrait of a young woman, full-length, standing turned to left, gazing at spectator, with brown curled shoulder-length hair, and wearing a pearl necklet. She is wearing an old-gold dress, white fichu and an olive green stole, pinned at the breast, worn over her right shoulder and falling down her left shoulder the end held, together with a fold of her dress with her left hand. Her right hand rests on a large urn from which flourishes a cactus; the urn is standing on a plinth on the left. Dark wall behind her on the right, and distant stormy sky on the left.

Provenance

On loan from the Phelips family since 1931; purchased with the aid of the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the V&A Museums and Galleries Commission Purchase Grant Fund in 1989.
