The attractive pattern on this tureen is called Shamrock and was designed by A.W.N. Pugin for the Minton pottery at Stoke-on-Trent. Sir James Kay-Shuttleworth is likely to have bought it in the 1850s to complement the impressive range of other works by Pugin he had already acquired for Gawthorpe.
