Oil painting on canvas, Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) as a Young Man by Robert S. Tait (fl.1845-1875). A three-quarter-length portrait as a young man, he is seated under a tree, his hat resting on her knee.


Given by the artist's daughter, Mildred Scott Tait (1860 - 1950) to Alicia Joanna Royston, Mrs Ramsey (1864 - 1933) by whom bequeathed to the National Trust
