The sitter was the daughter and heiress of William Freman of Speden and Catherine Blount of Tittenhanger, both in Hertfordshire. She married the Hon Charles Yorke, as his first wife, in 1755, when this portrait was probably painted. Her husband’s portrait, also by Hudson, also hangs at Wimpole, as its pair, although they were not necessarily conceived as such.

Oil painting on canvas, Catherine Freman, The Hon. Mrs Charles Yorke (1736/7-1759), by Thomas Hudson (Devonshire 1701 – Twickenham 1779), circa 1755. Three-quarter length portrait of a young woman. Daughter and heiress of William Freman of Speden and Catherine Blount of Tittenhanger, both in Hertfordshire. Married to the Hon Charles Yorke, as his first wife, in 1755, when this portrait was probably painted.

Bought at the 9th Earl of Hardwicke's sale at Christie's, 7 July 1967, lot 96; bequeathed by Elsie Kipling, Mrs George Bambridge (1896 - 1976), daughter of Rudyard Kipling, to the National Trust together with Wimpole Hall, all its contents and an estate of 3,000 acres
