Summary
Car of Wain A wain is a form of two-wheeled horse-drawn cart, being essentially a platform for the carriage of hay or harvest crops. It would have been equipped with ladders at either end to manage as large a load as possible, and rope roller bars to hold it in place. Wains varied in size, reflecting local landscape especially as in this example in Cornwall, and this is the middle sized of the three examples displayed at Godolphin. It can be reasonably identified as coming from Breage parish between Helston and Marazion. This vehicle exhibits very well the core function of the simple wain structure, as a platform for carriage of hay or harvest crops. It is in original condition other than the restored/replaced shafts and its missing ladders, which may however still be on site. Wains varied in size and of the three now at Godolphin, this is the middle sized one of the three.
Provenance
Rescued from disposal by Helston Museum. Identified as coming from Breage parish between Helston and Marazion in the 19th Century.
