A mahogany writing box with two brass hinges, two brass semi-circular movable handles, and a brass key plate. Lid opens to form a writing slope which is covered with green baize. The handle on the left can be used to pull out a frieze drawer in the base of the box, when the brass button is lifted inside, this holds the drawer in place internally. To the right of the lock, on the edge of the box, is a hinged brass support which can be fixed into a brass plate on the corresponding edge of the lid. This has three settings for supporting the lid. The baize cover is held in place by a small brass catch and when open gives access to a storage area and board for holding letters and papers. It has recesses for an inkwell, and a storage area for pens and pencils. The base is covered with green baize.
