Summary description

Oil painting on canvas, Lucy Watson, Mrs Thornton by Arthur Devis (Preston 1712 – London 1787), signed and dated: A Devis 1755. One of a set of eight family portraits by Arthur Devis (1711/12-1787). 'Lucy Watson, Mrs. Thornton'. Seated with her right elbow resting on a console table on which is her basket of sewing. She wears a pink dress and white lace cap. The fireplace is covered by a Chinese screen and on the wall behind is a bracket clock, with a pentimento beside it denoting its original position. Sir Matthew's Account Book May 10, 1748, 'Paid Devis on account of pictures £15.15'. Two others of this set are purported to exist in a private collection on the Welsh border (Sir Matthew and Sarah). Source, Mr. and Mrs. H. Milford of Havant, who have seen them.
