Croquet dress bodice
This gown has a separate bodice and skirt. It is made from a woven silk taffeta and trimmed with silk braid and fringe with hand-knotted tassels and glass buttons. The buttons are engraved with a croquet mallet and hoops, reflecting the vogue for the game during the 1860s.
Part of a three-piece croquet dress of 'graph paper' check brown on grey silk. Bodice with deep brown fringing to yoke and epaulettes, braid (brown / red / green) to neck, yoke and cuffs; fastening with hooks and eyes but with five ornamental buttons (attached by split pins) of white glass with black croquet hoop, mallets and balls. Bodice lined in linen. c.1863 - 1865
