Black papier mache table writing desk, the lid with a reverse painting on glass, with mother-of-pearl highlights, showing a naturalistic bouquet of flowers in bright colours on a cream ground. The frame of the top, and the serpentine sides, base and square tablet feet are all profusely covered in 'Persian' designs in gold and colours, interspersed with floral vignettes (now mostly rubbed and difficult to read). Inside, the writing slope is covered with royal blue velvet edged with a gilt stamped borders and the painted and gilt ornamental borders are preserved in their original bright colours. The body of the desk is covered in a blue, white and gold patterned paper with a fitted tray and side compartments for writing equipment and stationery; one of the compartments is lidded, with a mother-of-pearl button knob. Probably West Midlands, mid -19th century.
