Oil painting on canvas, Self-portrait (after Rembrandt) by Douglas Cowper (Gibraltar 1817 - 1839), 1835/39 A half-length portrait of Remrandt, wearing a black hat and black coat over gilt tunic. The original, in the Royal Collection, is also now thought, on the basis of technique, to be a pastiche composed in the mid-18th century by an unknown imitator of Rembrandt of his studio.
Purchased by the Cobbes from a sale in Newbury, around 1982; on loan - Cobbe Collection 315
Marks and inscriptions
A label from 1835 on the reverse states that this is a copy of the original in the Royal Collection.
