An Unknown Man in Grey
attributed to Robert Levrac-Tournières (Caen 1667 - Caen 1752)
Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Man in Grey, attributed to Robert Levrac-Tournieres (Caen 1667 - Caen 1752), 1688 - 1716. A head and shoulders portrait of a man, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator. If this portrait is by Tournieres it must be a work from the first half of his career, when he was still painting in the manner of Rigaud, whose assistant he had been, and before he changed his grade at the Academy from portrait to history painter (1716) after which he preferred to paint Dutch-influenced portraits much smaller than the scale of life.
Purchased by the Cobbes after a Sotheby's sale from a frame dealer (Steele?); on loan - Cobbe Collection 369
