Ursula Goldfinger studied under the French painter, Amédée Ozenfant, who was a leading exponent of Purism in the 1920s. Here, the Purist emphasis on simple, delineated forms is evident in the two-dimensional rendering of the couple. The harmony of the lovers’ union is reflected in the way Ozenfant has cleverly intertwined their lower bodies, so that figuratively (in every sense of the word!), they are one person.
