Highlights

Hawkshead, Cumbria

The region surrounding Hawkshead is the site of two places associated with Beatrix Potter: Hill Top and The Beatrix Potter Gallery. Hill Top is a 17th-century farmhouse purchased by Potter in 1905 with proceeds from her early books. The Beatrix Potter Gallery, formerly the office of Potter's husband, William Heelis, is one of Hawkshead's oldest buildings and is the venue for exhibitions of her artwork.

Nostell Priory, West Yorkshire

Nostell Priory is an architectural masterpiece of the 18th-century built on the remains of a medieval monastery. Designed by the Palladian architect James Paine it has exceptional neoclassical interiors by Robert Adam.

Sizergh Castle, Cumbria

Sizergh’s impressive 14th-century solar tower was once a highly visible testament to the power of the Strickland family during the Middle Ages. The tower and hall were later extended into a fashionable Tudor residence, replete with spectacular Elizabethan interiors.

Dyrham Park, Gloucestershire

Dyrham was transformed from a Tudor house into the present baroque mansion by William Blathwayt, Secretary at War to William of Orange. Dyrham retains much of its original, 17th-century interiors and houses Blathwayt’s superb collection of Dutch art.

Powis Castle, Powys

Standing in a commanding position, this medieval stronghold was extensively remodelled from the 17th century onwards. It has fine interiors and collections, spectacular terraces and gardens, and is also home to the Clive Museum – a superb collection of artefacts from India and the Far East.

Ickworth, Suffolk

Ickworth's extraordinary architecture was commissioned by the Earl-Bishop Frederick Hervey in 1795. The Rotunda was inspired by the ancient monuments of Rome and originally designed to display treasures collected from Italy.

Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire

Hardwick Hall is a magnificent Eilzabethan mansion built for Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury, known as Bess of Hardwick. Constructed when glass was a luxury commodity, the façade of Hardwick Hall is noted for its high proportion of windows to stone.

Mount Stewart, County Down

This neoclassical house was the Irish seat of the Vane-Tempest-Stewart family, Marquesses of Londonderry. Re-opened in 2015 after extensive restoration, it is one of the grandest stately homes in Northern Ireland. The spectacular gardens were created in the early 20th century by Lady Londonderry, the 7th Marchioness.
